International-Women Day A Global Celebration

According to Wikipedia, “International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called international Working Women’s Day, and is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet Bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother’s day and St Valentine’s Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Women’s_Day)
I believe this is a significant celebration, for many years women were challenged in the working world. Because of women voices we have made tremendous contributions to the business world. Women who have made contribution across the globe celebrate accomplishments today.

Florence Allen born in Utah September 12, 1966 was instrumental as an advocate for women. She was not allowed to enter New York University Law School. She is the first women to receive a law degree. She did attend the Chicago University Law School. Florence Nightingale “The Woman Lamp.” She would visit the wounded soldiers in the Crimean war working into the night taking care of the indigent and poor.” Harriet Tubman she will forever be remembered for saving hundreds of slaves the underground railroad from Northern States to Canada” (http://www.clevelandwomen.com/people/march2007.htm)

These are just a few women, there are many. Women have made an impact in so many areas. Today, we still have challenges but, great improvement is noted in the areas of business, medical, law, politics just to name a few. Women advocates, like MADD Mothers against Drunk Drivers continue to voice loudly to local, state and federal branches on the need to protect our communities against drunk driving. I believe this is a day of celebration, for the accomplishments of women. Men I love you and this is not a beat up men day it is also for you to reflect on women in your lives that have made a difference, those women whom have paved the way for you to achieve.

It is an International Day to celebrate women all over the world. Happy International Day!

Thanks for celebrating with me
